Do you ever feel like you are too busy to complete all of the jobs on your to-do list? Do you feel that there are just not enough hours in the day to accomplish all of your goals? Don’t feel embarrassed or upset if you answered yes to these questions, because many people feel that their days are flooded with work, family, and other commitments.

As we enter the fall and winter holiday season, reaching our goals becomes even more difficult as our schedules become inundated with family functions, overtime work, and preparation for final exams. So how are we supposed to find the time to achieve all of our lofty ambitions? The solution to this dilemma is quite simple and straightforward, but one whose effectiveness must constantly be reaffirmed and emphasized to those individuals who feel overwhelmed by their obligations.

The easy fix to this common problem is the idea of goal setting. Goal setting is a powerful tool that can be implemented to help you achieve numerous goals. The main purpose of this technique is to outline a clear set of objectives, and the means by which to reach them. By identifying your desires and the course by which to reach them, you will be able to achieve your ultimate goals. Stating your goals clearly will provide you with a direction, as well as a plan, that is always open to revision as progress is assessed. This plan will allow you to focus on the important details necessary to accomplish your tasks, while limiting your chances of getting lost or distracted.

So, how come everyone you come across does not have clear objectives and a mapped out plan of how to complete those objectives? Many people, and organizations, fail to set goals appropriately because they lack a strategy for goal setting. A tactical strategy that is widely used to instruct people on goal setting procedures is the acronym SCAMPI. SCAMPI has grown in popularity in recent years, and is regarded as the most effective way to enhance motivation and success in individuals.

Specific. Individuals with specific, well-defined goals put forth more effort and persistence than those who do not have a good reason for setting their goals.

Challenging. People who set challenging goals tend to accomplish more than those who set only moderate goals. However challenging, make sure that they are still manageable and attainable.

Approach. Set your goals with a positive mindset. Approaching goals with a positive attitude will pull you toward a desired outcome, rather than pushing you away from a negative one.

Measurable. Measurable goals have a larger impact on your performance because they allow you to track how far or how close you are from your goal.

Proximal. Be sure to break down your bigger, long-term goals into short-term, more obtainable goals. This will reward you with a frequent sense of accomplishment as you complete each step towards your ultimate goal.

Inspirational. People whose goals are consistent with their needs and values tend to exhibit more interest and confidence in achieving their goals. This, in turn, results in increased performance, drive, and creativity. Keep your goals inline with your own personal ideals and ambitions.

These six principles of goal setting are sure to help you organize, plan, and conquer many, if not all, of your tasks during this busy time of the year. Even if you only employ a few of these ideas, you will find that you are able to achieve more in your day than before, and will improve your general sense of accomplishment. Whether it be losing weight and getting in shape, doing better in a class, spending more time with friends and family, or working on a hobby, these guidelines to goal setting are an exceptional method to maximizing you potential.
