City Wide Student Day of ActionMar. 1 was the city wide student day of action to defend public education. The day started off with advocacy campaigns throughout the city including Hunter College and many CUNY schools. which staged teach ins to inform students and faculty about recent perceived attacks on education.
At 2 p.m. roughly 120 students from throughout the city gathered outside the Department of Education to protest budget cuts and the rise of student debt. Students chanted “Education is a right, students of the world unite” and “1, 2, 3, CUNY must be free.” At least 35 police officers monitored the rally.
The group of protesters then proceeded to march to the Brooklyn Bridge under the tight control of a unit of 13 NYPD scooters. The protesters arrived at the bridge and crossed it into Brooklyn via the pedestrian walkway without any incident, convening at Fort Green to continue the day’s protest.
