Hawks Outdoor Track & Field Gets Underway

The men and women of Hunter Outdoor Track and Field wasted no time in asserting themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the CUNYAC conference and beyond. Both teams kicked off their 2011 CUNYAC season on Mar. 12 at the Queensborough Relays in Bayside, Queens. With six top-three finishes on the women’s side and seven top-five finishes on the men’s side, both sides started their seasons in style.

Freshman Jelisa Forde continued her dominating collegiate track season as she won the 400-meter dash, stopping the clock at 1:02.66. Senior Angelique Restrepo hit a personal best in the 400-meter dash, finishing fifth, with a time of 1:09.92. Later in the day, Forde teamed up with sophomore Anna Zynda, junior Jacklyn Henderson, and sophomore Lizzy Mahoney to place second in the distance medley relay with a time of 14:05.

Sophomore Lizzy Mahoney won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 39:20, almost eight minutes ahead of the second place runner from York College. Freshman Stephie-Ann Dulipre also competed in the 10K, placing third with a time of 46:28.

In her first 400 intermediate hurdles of the season, Junior Mehida Alexandre placed third with a time of 1:19.10 while Freshman Melina Basant placed fourth with a time of 1:28.53.

In the throwing events, Senior Nancy Olisma placed third in the shot put and first among CUNYAC competitors with a throw just over 28 feet. Olisma also placed fourth in the javelin while freshman Mia Carroll placed 6th overall and 4th among CUNYAC competitors with a throw of 17.10 feet.

In the first event of the day on the men’s side, sophomores Christopher Guerrero, Alexander Arslan, and Jose Miranda took the top-three finishes in the 10K. Guerrero finished in first place with a time of 36:05. Arslan and Miranda were not too far behind as they stopped the clock at 36:16 and 37:14, respectively.

Junior Nick Rekhviashvili dominated the 400-meter hurdles, winning the event with a time of 1:04.03. Freshman Evan Laccetti also competed in the hurdles, placing second with a time of 1:08.34. Laccetti also placed second in the high jump, jumping 1.62 meters. In the 400-meter dash, sophomore Javier Levy sprinted to a second place finish with a time of 52.44.

The Hawks will continue their season on Mar. 19 when they travel to Middletown, Conn., for the Wesleyan Invitational.
